What is the meaning of the Buteyko logo?

The emblem symbolizes life on earth:

Carbon is the fundamental element of organic chemistry and of all living things. In the Periodic Table, carbon is identified as the letter C. Each carbon atom links with four others to form the lattice structure.

The Latin symbol for carbon C has been replaced with the circle because the circle is the symbol for eternal life.

The middle carbon atom has been replaced with the globe to signify its central importance to life on Earth. (The Earth mass depicted in yellow on the globe is Ukraine, Professor Buteyko's homeland.)

What is the Buteyko Breathing Method?

Do you remember the full figured models women of the Renaissance paintings? At that time, people were convinced that eating excessively was the best approach to health and beauty. Their logic is understandable: a human body needs nutrition, so, the more you give, the healthier it becomes. Right? It took several centuries for doctors to prove that obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, cancer and many other health issues. Today, people are concerned with reducing their food consumption as a means of ensuring health and longevity.

Food and water are essential for human life and yet it is not our first necessity. Without food, we can survive for weeks, without water - for days, but without air - for a few minutes. Have you ever determined how much air you consume? Too much? Too little? Or just enough? Air is invisible, weightless, and free and perhaps because of this, it hardly ever attracts anyone's attention. This situation would probably continue indefinitely; however, a discovery made by a Russian doctor and a scientist has created a totally new paradigm.

In 1952, Konstantin Buteyko found out that people often consume five to ten times more air than their bodies require. An excessive amount of air creates an insufficiency of carbon dioxide in the lungs and bloodstream, which negatively impacts metabolism and the immune system, gradually rendering them dysfunctional. Carbon dioxide deficit also affects respiratory gas exchange and diminishes the amount of oxygen carried by the blood to the brain, heart and kidneys. This situation can cause asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, cardiological problems, growth of tumors, etc. After a life-long research, Dr. Buteyko came to the conclusion that 150 of all known diseases are the result of hyperventilation. Ironically, those 150 diseases are the most widespread.

In order to overcome those diseases and develop health, Dr. Buteyko recommended reducing air consumption. It sounds like an easy solution; however, in actuality, this task was too difficult for most of his patients because they did not apply awareness towards their breathing. Then, Dr. Buteyko developed a series of breathing exercises, which, if performed with diligence, have a miraculous power: they eliminate symptoms and restore well-being to the body, mind and spirit. From one healed person to another, the Buteyko Method spread all over the world, often saving the lives of those who were sentenced to death by their health conditions.

Lucky for us, today, the Buteyko Method is available for anyone – young and old – interested in a holistic, drug-free and safe method of health development. And yet today, several decades after Buteyko's discovery, we still hear this advice: "Breathe deep!" Well, as we know from history, beliefs are stubborn, and it can sometimes take centuries to change them...

Can the Buteyko Method help everyone?

The Buteyko Lifestyle can reverse many forms of breathing difficulties, as well as other maladies as well (please see the complete list of diseases in the FAQs section). It also helps to create overall well-being of body, mind and spirit.

Can this method be taught to children?

Yes, any child over the age of three years old can learn the Buteyko Method. There are special stories and teaching techniques that help children change their breathing behavior in an easy and fun way. Commonly, children are able to learn and apply this method much faster than adults. Reduced breathing not only improves a child's health but also his/her ability to concentrate and complete intellectual tasks. Usually, children with reduced breathing become better students; they also become more tolerant and have fewer emotional issues.

Does Buteyko Center cure diseases?

We are not medical doctors, thus, we do not cure any diseases. At Buteyko Center USA, we supply people with information, which leads them to a healthier life and often, as a result of that, a disease gets cured. By eliminating hyperventilation, the immune system and metabolism start to work properly; the body does not need to spend energy to protect itself from an excessive amount of air, and, consequently, a person is able to restore his health.

How quickly will my health start to improve?

Many people experience a significant change in the first session. 90% experience a major change in the first two weeks. Often, as a result of our educational program, people are able to reduce their medications or eliminate them (under the supervision of their medical doctors).

What is healing crisis?

When people normalize their breathing, their metabolism becomes much stronger. As a result of this, the body starts to flush out toxins, which may have been accumulating for years. During this time, symptoms of a disease might temporarily worsen and the person may experience discomfort or feel sick. This is called a healing crisis. It is a normal and naturally occurring event. The healing crisis, even though its outcome is very positive, can appear as a rather frightening event, therefore, in our educational programs it is discussed in detail.

May I take an online course together with my friend?

You are welcome to observe the instructions (no extra charge), while the focus stays on one client. It is also possible for multiple students to participate in a program; however, in this case, there is an extra fee. Whatever you decide to do, please contact us and we will find a solution that fits you.

Why should a parent participate with a child?

In most cases, members of one family breathe in similar patterns; the breathing of one person influences another's. If your goal is to normalize the breathing of your child, the best results occur when the entire family learns and applies the Buteyko Method. Since in many cases this is impossible, we require at least one parent or guardian to be present during our sessions with a child (no extra charge). This will help you improve your own breathing and exemplify it for your child and other members of your family.

Does Buteyko Center help elders?

Yes, if they are willing to learn a new method and apply it in their life. There are no age limitations; however, it takes a strong commitment to master the breathing exercises.

What are the Buteyko breathing exercises?

The Buteyko breathing exercises are the core of the Buteyko Method, which is a drug-free, holistic technique for the treatment of asthma, allergies and breathing difficulties, as well as many other diseases. The exercises were developed by Dr. Konstantin Buteyko (1923-2003). Many clinical trials have shown that Buteyko breathing exercises can safely reduce asthma symptoms and the need for reliever medication and also greatly increase the overall quality of life. The Buteyko breathing exercises are most successful when tailored to the client’s individual medical condition and rate of improvement. It is strongly recommended to use the breathing exercises only under the supervision of a certified Buteyko Practitioner.

What is Clinica Buteyko?

Clinica Buteyko of Moscow was formed in 1987 by Konstantin Buteyko M.D., along with his wife Ludmila Buteyko, Ph.D. (Director of Education), and her son Andrey Novozhilov, M.D. (Medical Director). During the past thirty years, the staff of medical professionals at the Clinica have successfully treated thousands of patients from around the world. They have also taught the patented Buteyko Method to hundreds of Russian medical doctors and several international Buteyko practitioners.
In 2003, just before Professor Konstantin Buteyko passed away, Taras Shchetinin accepted the Professor’s request to become the Chief Executive Officer of the Clinica. Taras has led the expansion of Clinica Buteyko and its development on the Internet. The Clinica is now reaching even more people throughout Russia and the world.
Clinica Buteyko (Moscow) holds the patent for The Buteyko Method and thus, controls the training of Buteyko Practitioners. This work certification process ensures that The Buteyko Method is taught and applied exactly as Konstantin Buteyko required.

In 2009, Clinica Buteyko officially expanded into the USA by opening its sister institution -- Buteyko Center USA. Buteyko Center USA has exclusive rights to educate on the Buteyko Method in the United States and Canada. Currently, Clinica Buteyko does not have any other representatives or affiliates outside Russia. Clinica Buteyko is planning to open its official office in the Netherlands to coordinate the activities of practitioners in Europe.

What is the Buteyko Center USA?

In 2009, as a response to the numerous requests from the USA and Canada, Clinica Buteyko (Moscow) opened its first USA branch. The mission of the Buteyko Center USA is to educate those interested in improving their health through the Buteyko Method; as well as to train future Buteyko Practitioners and monitor their work.
The center was founded by Sasha and Thomas Yakovlev-Fredricksen, who have both completed the training and certification under the leadership of Ludmila Buteyko, Ph.D., and Andrey Novozhilov, M.D. Thomas suffered from a very serious case of asthma, which was previously diagnosed as incurable. During his stay in Moscow and educational training at the Clinica, he lost all symptoms of his illness. Upon their return to Woodstock, New York, Thomas and his wife Sasha organized The Buteyko Center USA.
At present, the Center offers a number of educational programs, which are designed to help people suffering from specific illnesses, as well as those who are interested in strengthening their general health. All courses are available both at the center in Woodstock and online. Most of the courses are set up as a one-on-one, individualized approach, and are offered in English or Russian. Clients also have the opportunity to receive a virtual consultation from the head of the medical team of Clinica Buteyko (Moscow).
The Buteyko Center USA also leads professional training courses for those interested in becoming Buteyko Practitioners. These courses are personally supervised by Ludmila Buteyko and Andrey Novozhilov. Their goals are to train new Buteyko specialists, advance the qualifications of already existing Practitioners, and expand the development of the Buteyko Method in the US and Canada.
The Buteyko Center USA is also working on various publishing projects that will reveal a deeper understanding about the discoveries, method, and life of Konstantin Buteyko.

Woodstock, New York. Is it the famous Woodstock?

Woodstock is a small town 90 miles north of New York City. It has a rich artistic history and is best known for its involvement with the Woodstock Concert in 1969. Here is what to expect in Woodstock by the seasons:

Spring sneaks up on Woodstock, bringing much missed warmth and sunshine. The town wakes out of hibernation and celebrates by taking advantage of the perfect hiking and biking weather. The nearby streams roar with the heavy load of melted snow, creating amazing waterfalls. In April, seemingly overnight, everything bursts into bloom. Flowers take over the ground and the trees. Spring also brings many rainy days, providing a great reason to relax indoors and enjoy the refreshing breeze through open windows.

Summer is the town’s most active season. There is a Shakespeare Festival, a Guitar Festival, a Tattoo Festival… There is a weekly drum circle, a weekend flea market, and a Wednesday farmer’s market. There are street vendors selling jewelry, souvenirs, fruit, flavored ice. Cafes set up tables outside. There are free music concerts on the village green. Summers are hot and because of this many spend their days at one of the many beautiful swimming holes, taking a dip, or lounging on warm rocks. There are a couple of spots right in town, and many in the nearby woods and mountains.

The famous Northeast autumns are in full color by early October. Hiking at this time is incredible as the forests paint themselves in all shades of sunset. As some leaves fall to the ground, it becomes easier to spot squirrels, deer, birds, and other wildlife preparing for winter. At the top of Overlook Mountain (which Woodstock is snuggled up against), a panorama of the entire region reveals itself and it is well worth the hike to see the Catskills burning red and yellow. Woodstock quiets down a bit after the summers, though there are still a lot of music and art events, spiritual workshops, theater, and yoga retreats. The famous Woodstock Film Festival takes place in September and gathers great films and interesting celebrities for a long weekend. There is always a big Halloween celebration, which includes music, a masquerade ball, and, of course, treats. Local shops give out goodies to anyone in costume, and in Woodstock, that means pretty much everyone, including the pets.

Winter is the best time to discover the locals’ Woodstock. It is peaceful and quiet, though there are still events that take place year round. Cafes provide a cozy escape from the cold and fill up with old-timers who will gladly tell you about the time Bob Dylan lived here, the next art gallery opening, or what the skiing conditions are. The town looks like it belongs in a fairytale as the shops set up their decorations. A giant peace sign made out of holiday lights hangs above the village green. The main street is lined with little shops selling everything from unusual clothing, to unique jewelry, chocolates, blown glass, beautiful handmade candles, alternative books, etc… On Christmas Eve, the entire town gathers together to greet Santa. His method of arrival is always kept secret. In the past, he’s traveled by helicopter, elephant, time machine, and a flower-power van.

Is it true that the Buteyko Method cures asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases?

Konstantin Buteyko taught that asthma, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, are the result of hyperventilation, or over-breathing. By reducing the air intake, people can significantly reduce their symptoms and reverse the progression of the disease. In many cases, they are completely freed from asthma, bronchitis and allergies.

Dr. K. P. Buteyko, On Asthma:

Two hundred years ago asthma was considered a mild ailment. Having asthma generally meant having a long life free of other diseases. However, no one could explain how asthma prevented other ailments or why asthmatics lived longer than others.

Today, we know that asthma is not an ordinary disease. Bronchospasm, the main component of asthma, acts as a protective mechanism, helping to maintain biological constants and important functions at near normal levels.

We have also learned that asthma or bronchospasm cannot exist unless the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) level in the lungs is abnormally low. Since the metabolic and immune systems can function correctly only if the CO2 level is normal, the limit of the asthmatic’s CO2 level protects him or her and allows for a long and healthy life.

It is this powerful defense mechanism that provides the asthmatic with an improved biological system. Evidently, bronchospasm is one way the organism has adapted to its environment.

Modern drug treatment for asthma is aimed at neutralizing this protective mechanism. The organism then fights back again and again with more intensive bronchospasms leading to a rapid deterioration of the asthma from drug treatment.

It is not possible to cure asthma by removing a protective mechanism like broncospasm. Only when the condition responsible for the bronchospasm is removed, can asthma be reversed.

Breathing difficulties: can the Buteyko Method help?

Absolutely! Dr. Konstantin Buteyko’s discovery and cure both revolve around balancing the body’s use of oxygen and carbon dioxide. It is the imbalance of these two elements that causes the reactions of the body, which, in turn, create the majority of breathing difficulties we experience. By applying the Buteyko Method properly, the system balance is restored and breathing difficulties defeated.

There is more information on this subject in the book
Asthma Cure Manual, by Dr. A. Novozhilov. This book is written for people with asthma and other breathing difficulties. The book is available in our store to download and in paper format.)

I wake up every morning with a stuffy nose; will this method help me?

Yes. By making your nose stuffy, your organism protects itself from over-breathing: it simply narrows air channels. We will teach you how to reduce your breathing and that will eliminate the cause of your problem. Aside from that, you will learn a special technique, which Dr. Buteyko developed for clearing nasal passages. You can use it any time you feel a need to unblock your nose. It is a gentle technique and, unlike many others, does not cause additional hyperventilation and mucus creation.

My husband snores like an elephant. Will Buteyko stop his snoring?

K. Buteyko passed away, so he will not be able to stop your husband from snoring :) ; however, his method can. Snoring indicates hyperventilation and this can be changed if you reduce your breathing. There are also specific exercises, which help to prevent from over-breathing during the night. As you can change your day breathing patterns, you can also change your night breathing patterns. As a result of both, you will become much healthier.

Can obesity be treated by the Buteyko Method?

The United States Surgeon General has proclaimed obesity an epidemic and the cause of 300,000 deaths per year.

Between 1962 and 2000; the number of obese Americans grew from 13% to an alarming 31%. 63% of Americans are overweight. Childhood obesity in the United States has more than tripled in the last twenty years. The average adult female now weighs 163 pounds. In 1985, the average woman’s dress size was eight, now it is a size 14.

There are more diets and weight loss programs available than ever before, and yet the obesity epidemic is growing in the United States. Why is this?

Dr. Konstantin Buteyko determined that one of the major causes of obesity is hyperventilation, which makes metabolism unbalanced. Excessive inhalation throws the entire metabolism into a stressed state and it reacts as if there is a physical threat or the need to exert oneself beyond limits. In this situation, the body starts to release its stores of sugar, carbohydrates, hormones, and fluids in order to provide additional fuel in case it is needed.

Following this situation, it does not matter whether calories have been burnt off by a physical action or remained in the bloodstream, unused - the result is the same. The body craves additional nutrition to replenish its resources and the person consumes superfluous food, which, in turn, provokes hyperventilation. And, the vicious circle begins again.

There are, of course, other reasons for weight gain: desire for food with a familiar and pleasurable taste and a sedentary lifestyle with many hours spent in a car, in front of a TV, or a computer.

Konstantin Buteyko found out that when breathing patterns are normalized, the metabolism system returns to its normal function as well, allowing the person to naturally lose weight and stop craving excessive amounts of food. This is the main difference between the Buteyko method and dieting or other weight loss programs. With dieting, the desire to eat unhealthy food comes back as soon as the diet is over. With the breathing exercises, such cravings subside and eventually disappear all together.

The other core difference is how the Buteyko method affects the side effects of obesity. Dieting affect only your body’s actual mass, while problems such as high blood pressure or heart malfunctions which often go along with obesity, remain problematic after the diet ends. Buteyko’s method, instead, improves the health of the whole body, so that when it is used to tackle obesity, it normalizes the rest of the body’s functions.

By applying Buteyko breathing exercises together with monitored physical activities, people suffering from obesity can lose weight and create healthy eating habits. They can do this simply with breath control, rather than endless diets or stimulants!

What is the patented Buteyko Method?

The Buteyko Method is a patented method. It was patented in Russia in 1989; Ludmila Buteyko and Andrey Novozhilov are the current holders of this patent and the owners of the intellectual property associated with it. The Buteyko logo and the trademark ‘Buteyko’ are also registered in Russia as well as in other countries. At the moment, Clinica Buteyko is finalizing the process of the worldwide registration. Any person who uses the Buteyko Breathing Method commercially is required to have a valid Work Certificate issued by patent holders via Buteyko Center USA.

Clinica Buteyko is also a registered trademark; non-medical companies and organizations are not allowed to use it. Presently, only the Clinica Buteyko located in Moscow, Russia and Novosibirsk, Russia have legal rights to use this name. Unfortunately, there are some attempts among some western practitioners to use this well-known brand in order to gain credibility and popularity.
