Can the Buteyko Method Cure Asthma and COPD?

Are you tired of letting asthma control your life? Exhausted by the never-ending medications with their daunting side effects? Terrified of the next coughing fit? Frustrated by the mucus, the wheezing, the chest pain? Then, get rid of it.

In 1952, Dr. Konstantin Buteyko, a renowned Russian scientist, discovered that asthma, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, are the result of hyperventilation, or over-breathing. An excessive amount of air creates an insufficiency of carbon dioxide in the lungs and bloodstream, which negatively impacts metabolism and the immune system, gradually rendering them dysfunctional. A carbon dioxide deficit also affects respiratory gas exchange and diminishes the amount of oxygen carried by the blood to the brain, heart and kidneys.

By reducing their breath intake, people are able to significantly reduce symptoms and, in many cases, reverse the progression of the disease. Many become completely asthma free. Dr. Buteyko developed a series of breathing exercises, which, if performed with diligence, have a miraculous power: they eliminate symptoms and restore well-being to the body, mind and spirit. From one healed person to another, the Buteyko Method spread all over the world, often saving the lives of those who were sentenced to death by their health conditions.

Learn the Cure:

The Book, Asthma Cure Manual, is the perfect introduction to the Buteyko Breathing Method. The book contains step-by-step descriptions of breathing exercises that are a highly effective and drug-free method for getting rid of all symptoms of asthma.

The book is full of useful suggestions, including techniques on how to prevent hyperventilation during sleep or how to accurately gauge your Control Pause. In addition, there is a comprehensive guide to steroid therapy, and how to best practice it in combination with Buteyko breathing. The techniques described in the book are suitable for children and adults. The author, Dr. Andrey Novozhilov, has been practicing Buteyko breathing for over forty years and teaching to others for almost twenty years. He is the Medical Director of the Clinica Buteyko. Foreword by Thomas Yakovlev-Fredricksen.

Buteyko Center USA offers wellness programs and educational courses for individuals and their families as well as group workshops. During these programs you will learn the theory of the patented Buteyko Method and its application in your daily life. You will receive all necessary knowledge to regain or improve your health and life!

The first step is the Initial Assessment, which takes 45 minutes ($45). The assessment can be done online or at our center in Woodstock, NY. The main goal of this individual consultation is to help the client (and members of his/her family) evaluate the potential effect of the Buteyko Method in his life. In order to determine this, it is important for the Buteyko Specialist to measure the client's breathing and learn his health history. During the consultation, the teacher will also briefly explain the theory of the Method and introduce breathing exercises. Furthermore, this consultation will give the student an opportunity to ask questions. From the information gathered during this session, the Buteyko Specialist will create an individualized program for each client.

Success Stories:

It all started when I was ten years old and came down with pneumonia. After my recovery, I started getting asthma attacks whenever I went out to play with the other kids. The doctors said I developed severe allergies, needed allergy shots and an awful tasting liquid medication. The treatment helped but did not stop it. I would still get severe attacks, just less frequently. As the years went by the doctors said that I would grow out of it as I got older. It eased up slightly until 1985 when I ended up in the hospital with a life threatening asthma attack. I spent three days there, was given more medication and told that an attack this severe could happen again at anytime. I continued on using the medication and staying away from the triggers. In 2006 I came down with pneumonia again, but this time it was worse. I spent one month on steroid inhalers and prednesone. I was told I needed to stay on steroids the rest of my life. With this treatment I started to develop stomach problems, which meant I needed another medication.

After three more years of frustration I decided to look into alternative medicine. I found the Buteyko Center USA on the Internet and read the entire website. I could not believe that I have been hyperventilating all these years.

I called Thomas and after talking with him, I knew he could help me. The theory made sense. I met him in person and had my first session at Woodstock. It was fantastic. Since then my sessions have been on SKYPE, which works great. Within four days of doing the formal exercises and monitoring my breathing I reduced my medication by 75%. Now I'm at day 32 and on NO medication at all! I still can't believe it's true and cannot remember when I have felt this good. I still have a way to go and I'm staying focused. The best part is I have the control over asthma, which has controlled me for 40 years.

Thomas, Thank you for this wonderful education. You have become a true friend for life.

About Asthma

Two hundred years ago asthma was considered a mild ailment. Having asthma generally meant having a long life free of other diseases. However, no one could explain how asthma prevented other ailments or why asthmatics lived longer than others.

Today, we know that asthma is not an ordinary disease. Bronchospasm, the main component of asthma, acts as a protective mechanism, helping to maintain biological constants and important functions at near normal levels.

We have also learned that asthma or bronchospasm cannot exist unless the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) level in the lungs is abnormally low. Since the metabolic and immune systems can function correctly only if the CO2 level is normal, the limit of the asthmatic’s CO2 levelprotects him or her and allows for a long and healthy life.

It is this powerful defense mechanism that provides the asthmatic with an improved biological system. Evidently, bronchospasm is one way the organism has adapted to its environment.

Modern drug treatment for asthma is aimed at neutralizing this protective mechanism. The organism then fights back again and again with more intensive bronchospasms leading to a rapid deterioration of the asthma from drug treatment.

It is not possible to cure asthma by removing a protective mechanism like broncospasm. Only when the condition responsible for the bronchospasm is removed, can asthma be reversed.

What are the Buteyko breathing exercises?

The Buteyko breathing exercises are the core of the Buteyko Method, which is a drug-free, holistic technique for the treatment of asthma, allergies and breathing difficulties, as well as many other diseases. The exercises were developed by Dr. Konstantin Buteyko (1923-2003). Many clinical trials have shown that Buteyko breathing exercises can safely reduce asthma symptoms and the need for reliever medication and also greatly increase the overall quality of life. The Buteyko breathing exercises are most successful when tailored to the client’s individual medical condition and rate of improvement. It is strongly recommended to use the breathing exercises only under the supervision of a certified Buteyko Practitioner.
